City of Burnaby switches to height-based building policies, abandoning density limits

Burnaby has replaced floor area ratio (FAR) density calculations with a Height-Based Development Framework to simplify project approvals and improve predictability. This new approach regulates building heights across nine zoning districts, allowing up to 40 storeys in some areas, with flexibility for additional height through community benefits. The framework supports transit-oriented development and aligns with provincial housing goals, aiming to accelerate housing supply and enhance urban design.
